Bridge planned to link town centre with school and leisure centre
THERE are plans to build a new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists in Aberdare to link the town centre to the school and leisure centre.
The application for the active travel footbridge over the River Cynon is set to go before Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s planning committee on Thursday, April 15.
The planning report said that along the A4059, the pedestrian route between Aberdare town centre and the Michael Sobell Sports Centre and Aberdare Community School is being reconfigured and upgraded to an active travel route.
As part of the reconfiguration and improvement a new footbridge is required over the River Cynon, better linking the town centre and surrounding amenities, it said.
It will be located approximately 130m south of the existing footbridge and footpath links and a crossing on the A4059 will be provided moving the existing crossing immediately south of the roundabout further south to service the new bridge.
No objections to the application have been received from the public, the planning report said.
Planning officers have recommended that the committee approves the plan and have said that it provides an opportunity to address congestion issues on the A4059.
They said in the planning report: “The principle of the proposed development is acceptable in terms of planning policy.
“Further the proposed development is acceptable in terms of all other material planning considerations.
“Additionally, the proposals present the opportunity to improve active travel opportunities in the town and address congestion difficulties on the principal route A4059.”
