How they rated
LEIGH HALFPENNY
The poor fellow lasted less than a minute before twisting his knee after slipping on the turf trying to launch a counter-attack. He was carted off visibly distraught with a suspected ACL knee ligament injury the immediate feedback.
JONAH HOLMES
Went to full-back when Halfpenny went off and the Dragons man will be pleased with his contribution.
8 Finished off a beautifully worked try in the 20th minute and got involved all game in Wales’ best attacking moments.
WILLIS HALAHOLO
A livewire presence in attack where his quick feet and penchant for the mis-pass caused Canada numerous problems. One brilliant defensive turnover at the end of the first half too after Canada launched a rare attack from a restart.
JONATHAN DAVIES
If this wasn’t the easiest Test Davies has ever played in heaven knows which one was. His straight running and vision in midfield stood out as you’d expect. Simply looked too good to be involved in a game like this.
TOM ROGERS
A hugely encouraging Test
8 debut for the Scarlets youngster. His first involvement was to have opposite number Kainoa Lloyd crash through his tackle for Canada’s early try, but it got much better.
CALLUM SHEEDY
An armchair ride for the Bristol playmaker although the de-structured nature of the game was a test of decision-making, which he passed with honours.
TOMOS WILLIAMS
Didn’t get everything right and his poor box-kick led to Canada’s early
8 try. He recovered quickly and impressively though, and his two tries capped an energetic and classy display.
STAR MAN: BEN CARTER 8 9 8
8
A fine debut for the 20-year-old Dragons lock. He called a Welsh lineout that functioned smoothly albeit under next to no pressure, but he popped up around the field regularly, making his presence felt in the collisions and for a debutante he was composed and barely put a foot wrong.
NICKY SMITH
Trademark bustling and mobile display from the Ospreys man who dived over a ruck for a well-taken try in the 28th minute. No real test at set-piece but burned off the calories ball-carrying and supporting runners.
ELLIOT DEE
Has been in and around the squad for a while and went about his work with the minimum of fuss. Claimed a first Test try in the 32nd minute and
8 was efficient with his service at lineout. Permanent presence in the contact area. DILLON LEWIS Will face far sterner examinations at set-piece, though he
8 steamrollered Djustice Sears-Duru in the few scrums that transpired. High work rate and powerful presence on the gain-line.
WILL ROWLANDS
The Dragons-bound man was replaced in the 48th minute by Josh Turnbull, but up until then he had been a
8 high quality menacing presence for the home side. Made the hard yards in contact against a Canada side who couldn’t deal with him.
ROSS MORIARTY By his standards a quiet afternoon. The Dragons man got through plenty of work but didn’t show up in open play in the way he is capable of.
JAMES BOTHAM
7 Another who claimed a first Test try, finishing off out wide in the 15th minute. Still learning his trade at this level and a comfortable afternoon will do his confidence and development no harm. Made way for two-try Taine Basham in the 50th minute. .
AARON WAINWRIGHT
7
Another member of the Welsh forward pack who just wouldn’t go away for Canada. Carried well, tackled
8 well and very few errors on a fairly routine afternoon.
