TV PICKS OF THE WEEK
OUR NHS: A HIDDEN HISTORY Thursday, BBC1, 9pm
Brexit and Covid have done more to throw the National Health Service into sharp relief than arguably any other events in history, and particularly the overseas staff without which the NHS would simply have long since collapsed.
In this insightful documentary, David Olusoga celebrates the health service’s immigrant workforce, which has been its backbone from its creation 70 years ago to the current pandemic.
Olusoga tells the story of the NHS from the perspective of Irish and Caribbean nurses, Asian doctors and Eastern European ancillary workers, whose personal journeys expose eye-opening truths.
SCOTLAND: A YEAR IN THE WILD Friday, Channel 5, 7pm
The series ends with an unseasonably warm January that brings the red deer out of hiding.
They capitalise on the lack of freezing winds to head for the hilltops where there’s lots of food. The clement weather is a disaster for the mountain hares, however, who have nowhere to
hide from golden eagles, while the Cairngorms’ red squirrel population look to stock up their food stashes.
CHARLES & DI’S WEDDING: THE REVELATIONS
Saturday, Channel 5, 9pm This documentary examines the week leading up to the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in July 1981, which lifted the nation’s spirits.
Among the interviewees are people who knew the couple, including Mary Robertson, Col Robert Spencer, and Angela Rippon – who carried out a pre-wedding interview and presented live coverage on the day.
