Powell’s treble sinks the Rangers in opener

- RTM Brickwork Merthyr Tydfil Association Football League

Premier Division Aberfan Rangers 0 v 3 Georgetown BGC.

The Rangers were making their debut in the league and they did themselves proud with a plucky display against a Georgetown team that were back after not having a side for several years. Unfortunately, the hopes of the home side were spoiled by J. Powell who helped himself to a first half hattrick which settled the game.

Baili Glas v Trelewis Welfare B:

Veteran keeper Chris Evans was drafted in due to injuries and kept a clean sheet for the Baili. The home goals came in the first half from James Mutton and Dion Jones but credit to the Welfare B side who gave an excellent account of themselves making their debut in the league.

Black Lion v Gurnos FC: Both sides came into the game with high hopes and the game played on a poor pitch still served up a good game. Jordan Jones opened the scoring for the visitors with a 9th minute penalty, but five minutes later T. Rees levelled things up. It was all square at the break, but Jordan Jones thought he had the winner before T. McKeown stepped up in stoppage time to level the game.

Trelewis Welfare A v Pantyscallog VJ:

Both these sides will have high expectations for the season and this game showed their strengths, the home side had a great start with two early goals coming from C. Jay & C. Martin. Chris Davies got the visitors back into the game in the 17 th minutes but the two goal lead was restored when K. Hawkins got a 76 th minute goal. Pant never gave up and Tom Randall gave them hope with a penalty with 5 minutes to go but the Welfare held out for the 3 points.

Merthyr Saints v Bedlinog:

Bedlinog were making their first appearance in the league for several years but had to field a weakened side but don’t take anything away from the Saints who were on excellent form. Home goals came from Ian Cleary with 4 (1 pen), Leon Pugh with a hattrick, Ross James and Shane Egan. J. Bevan got the consolation goal for the visitors.
