White Bridge closed since being damaged in storm set to reopen this weekend

-

THE White Bridge will reopen this weekend, it has been confirmed.

Berw Road Bridge, locally known as the White Bridge, was severely damaged during Storm Dennis in February 2020 and has since remained closed.

Earlier this year Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) County Borough Council confirmed it was working towards a two-phase repair scheme.

Now the council has confirmed the bridge will reopen on the morning of Saturday, September 4.

Earlier this month, the council provided an update on the works to reopen the unique listed structure following extensive scour repairs and structural assessments, which confirmed the bridge is capable of dealing with similar loads to those it carried prior to Storm Dennis (7.5T).

A statement released by the council read: “The council can now confirm a date for the reopening of the White Bridge (Berw Road Bridge) following further progress of works – with the structure set to reopen on the morning of Saturday, September 4.

“Lighting on the structure is expected to be reinstated on Friday, August 27, with Hammonds (the council’s contractors for the scheme) attending the site from Tuesday, August 31, to carry out minor outstanding works.

“As previously outlined, trial repairs will be carried out on the main structure and this work will help to inform the development of a major repair programme, in conjunction with Cadw, to secure the bridge for the future.

“The council anticipates that these major works will require further closures of the structure, which are likely to be in 2022.”
