TV FILMS of the week
1 IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK Thursday, BBC4, 9pm
Best friends Tish Rivers (KiKi Layne) and Fonny Hunt (Stephan James), left, fall in love in 1970s Harlem. A woman (Emily Rios) accuses Fonny of rape and as he awaits trial Tish confirms she is pregnant to her parents (Regina King, Colman Domingo) and vows to prove her man’s innocence. A sublime adaptation of James Baldwin’s novel.
2 BOOKSMART Friday, BBC3, 9.30pm
High school students Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) and Molly (Beanie Feldstein), left, have studiously forsaken partying to achieve their academic dreams. The pals are gob-smacked to learn that lazy peers have also secured places at coveted institutions. The over-achievers resolve to make amends in this raucous rites-of-passage comedy.
3 KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE Saturday, Channel 4, 9pm
Secret agents Eggsy (Taron Egerton, left) and Merlin (Mark Strong) join forces with their US counterparts to bring down a femme fatale. Thankfully they are assisted by a veteran hero brought back from the dead. While Colin Firth’s return as Harry cheapens the impact of the first movie’s twist, it matters little here.
4 THE ADDAMS FAMILY Sunday, Channel 4, 9pm
Morticia (Anjelica Huston), Gomez (Raul Julia) and their children Wednesday (Christina Ricci) and Pugsley (Jimmy Workman) are happy in their own strange, morbid way, but their unconventional existence is threatened when they open their spooky home to man claiming to be Gomez’s long-lost brother Fester (Christopher Lloyd).
5 THE FAVOURITE Monday, Film4, 9pm
Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) is removed from the machinations of government, allowing her secret lover Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz) to effectively control 18th-century Britain. While Sarah has the monarch’s ear, Robert Harley (Nicholas Hoult) challenges her authority from his seat of power in Westminster.
6 THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Tuesday, ITV, 11.15pm
Andrew Garfield takes on the role of geeky teen Peter Parker, who is bitten by a tainted arachnid, and gains special powers. Meanwhile, Rhys Ifans co-stars as the scientist who befriends Parker, only to then undergo a transformation of his own into the villainous Lizard. It also boasts Emma Stone as love interest Gwen Stacy.
7 LE MANS ’66 Wednesday, Film4, 9pm
Marketing executive Lee Iacocca (Jon Bernthal) persuades his boss, Henry Ford II (Tracy Letts), that the key to revitalising the ailing car brand is to make Ford sexy. Ford eventually orders his company’s racing division to build a car capable of humiliating Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans race.
