Daniel’s debt to Rodgers

-

STURRIDGE: Long haul DANIEL STURRIDGE believes Brendan Rodgers’ new- found faith in his talents will be crucial in helping him fulfi l his potential.

The England striker became the fi rst eye- catching mover in the transfer window when completing his £ 12million switch from Chelsea yesterday and signalled his intention to remain at Liverpool for the long haul.

Sturridge, 23, has enjoyed a nomadic career to date, leaving Coventry to join Manchester City as a schoolboy before moving to Chelsea in 2009 for a £ 6.5m fee – and later spending a spell on loan at Bolton.

Manchester City will now get £ 825,000 of the fee as they had a 15 per cent sell- on clause for any profi t.

Rodgers had doubts about the forward’s character during the last window and shunned the chance to sign him, but he has since changed his view. For his part, Sturridge, who will wear the No15 jersey, hopes his best years are to come at Anfi eld.

“The manager said he sees me here for a long time and I also see myself here for a long time,” said Sturridge, who was ineligible for the Sunderland game.

“I’ve not signed to play for a couple of years and then move on. I’ve signed to be here for as long as possible.

“It’s a humongous club. I’m just happy the manager has put his faith in me. I can’t ask for any more from him in bringing me here.

“It’s great to be part of a revolution and to be part of something special. Hopefully we’ll be able to bring a bit of success for the fans.”

While admitting he prefers to play as a central striker, Sturridge insisted he had made no specifi c demands over his role .

“With Luis Suarez, Raheem Sterling and the other players here, it’s going to be great for myself and I’m sure we’ll connect well together,” he added.

“We all have similar attributes, so hopefully we’ll be able to create a few nightmares for defenders.”
