Pardew said: “I saw him on Wednesday night and it was diffi cult to explain to him the situation we are in.
“In the summer when he was close to coming, he probably thought we were going to be a top- eight side. It was a different conversation but he understands we’ve had some unusual conditions this year and if we can get our best team out there, there’s no doubt we’ve got a great side.
“His addition is going to help because that’s a key area for us at the back.
“He will improve our distribution and he will defend that side of the pitch as well as anyone else in the league. The problem we have got now is getting a striker in this window, as it’s not easy.
“I must have had about 28 calls this morning that I’ve ignored.”
With top scorer Demba Ba joining Chelsea, Pardew desperately needs striking options and is hoping to land Marseille’s prolifi c forward Loic Remy for about £ 11m.
