We won’t moan at umpire howler

- Gideon Brooks

ENGLAND will take no further action over the umpires’ cock- up that denied James Taylor a century and cost them their fi nal wicket against Australia.

Confusion reigned at the end of the match when Dharmasena. The ICC later confi rmed that the ball should have been deemed dead as soon as Taylor was given lbw and therefore Anderson could not have been run out.

An ICC statement said: “The playing control team spoke to the England team management and acknowledge that the game ended incorrectly and an error was made.”

However, England coach Peter Moores said he would not be taking the issue further and was in fact pleased with the respect his players showed the umpires despite their howler.

“There’s nothing we can do, really. We made our point at the time. James Taylor made the point in the middle. The decision was made and a mistake was made,” he said. “The game is fi nished and, to be honest, we have other things to focus on.”

Moores had sympathy for Taylor, who would more likely than not have completed his century had he been allowed to continue after the lbw decision was reversed.

“We all felt for him as he had played so well. It would have been great for him to get over the line and get a hundred,” said the England coach.

“But hundred or no hundred, to get 98 not out in a batting display with which we were very disappointed, was a great effort.”

England’s net run- rate will suffer marginally as a result of being all out 111 runs shy of Australia’s total but, if it comes down as the deciding issue on whether they escape from the group, they will not dare moan.
