Riley burst lifts Wildcats

-

WAKEFIELD coach James Webster watched his unrated side make it two wins from two at the start of the Super League and warned there is more to come.

The Wildcats were widely predicted to fi nish bottom, but they sit alongside St Helens at the top after following up their 24- 22 opening- round win at Castleford with a 44- 24 home victory over Hull KR yesterday.

They were only leading 22- 18 after an hour, but former Warrington winger Chris Riley went over for three tries in an 11- minute spell to put them out of sight.

Former Hull half- back Jacob Miller completed his hat- trick to make it a memorable home debut.

“I thought we kept inviting them back into the game,” said Webster . “The game was in the balance with 15 minutes to go but I honestly thought, if we had put our foot on the pedal from the start, we could have blown them away.

“Chris Riley is a great player. I was really surprised Warrington allowed him to come on loan. We won’t get ahead of ourselves but we’ve improved and I am very happy.”

Hull KR boss Chris Chester said: “I’m extremely disappointed. We have a lot of problems to fi x up because we were a long way off.” JENNY Meadows is determined not to be denied a gold medal when she heads to the European Indoor Championships as favourite for the 800 metres.

Meadows, 33, tuned up for next month’s date in Prague by claiming her seventh national crown at the British Indoor Championships in Sheffi eld yesterday, clocking two mins 01.43 secs.

It was the fourth fastest time in the world this year and the Wigan athlete said: “I’m beginning to feel in the form of my life.”
