Ideye aims to emulate Kanu

- By Ian Baker

BROWN IDEYE has set his sights on matching friend and countryman Nwankwo Kanu by winning the FA Cup .

The 26- year- old has fi nally hit form at West Brom with four goals in three games since a move to Qatar fell through, ironically after West Ham pulled the plug on Carlton Cole’s move to the Black Country.

He scored twice as the Hammers were thrashed on Saturday and is now dreaming of Wembley, where Kanu was a hero for Portsmouth in 2008, scoring goals in the semi- fi nal against West Brom and the fi nal against Cardiff. “For me, he is like a mentor,” said Ideye of the striker who also played for the Baggies.

“In Nigeria Kanu is one of the big players that everybody looks up to. He calls me sometimes and I get some advice from him .

“I have never played at Wembley so it would be a dream come true.” West Brom are now in the quarter- fi nals as they seek to claim their fi rst FA Cup since 1968 .

Ideye beat the offside trap to put them ahead in the 20th minute before a stunning strike from James Morrison made it 2- 0. Ideye headed the third goal in the 55th minute before Saido Berahino fi nished the visitors off .

West Ham’s misery was completed by Morgan Amalfi tano’s sending off for shoving Chris Brunt in the face in the 70th minute . Frustrated fans shouted “**** off Allardyce” and midfi elder Stewart Downing understood why they were angry.

“I would be the same had I been watching that,” he said. But he believes the Hammers can bounce back at Tottenham in the league on Sunday.

“We don’t expect them to fi nish above us,” he said.
