Christian football team is too nice to win

- By David Pilditch

A CHRISTIAN football team does not have a prayer in the local Sunday league... because the players are just too nice.

Hapless Amory Green Rovers have conceded 120 goals and lost all 16 matches so far this season – including one 22- 0 drubbing.

They prop up division seven of the Devon & Exeter Football League without a single point.

But although they confess to being totally useless, the players have behaved impeccably and have never received a red or yellow card. Player manager Marc Hodsdon, 33, insisted that running the team according to his Christian ethos is more important than winning games.

Marc, of Tiverton, said: “We are absolutely shocking to be fair.

“We could well be Britain’s worst football team – but we are certainly the nicest.

“We always try to win but we have lost 22- 0 and 17- 0 already this season. We have had some right annihilations but we don’t get players sent off and we never abuse the ref. We are quite competitive but we are open to everyone, whatever their ability.

“The most important thing is giving people somewhere to get out and socialise.”

Marc, a forklift delivery driver, launched the Rovers as a conventional team 10 years ago.

He said: “We got promoted a few times but then I gave it up to have children. I came back last season but I wanted to do it a bit differently. I had found faith while I was away and so for us it is not just about winning, relegations and promotions any more.”

Marc insisted that in addition to being the nicest team around they are also the happiest.

He said: “Last week we lost 15- 1, yet we walked off the pitch the happier team. The other side were arguing among themselves. That’s not what football is about.

“Our players know they are not all blessed with talent – but they genuinely love the game.”
