Step- brother of Becky charged with her murder

- By John Chapman

THIS is the first picture of the man accused of the murder of 16- year- old Becky Watts whose dismembered body was discovered by police this week.

Becky’s step- brother Nathan Matthews, 28, is snapped at a Christmas fancy dress party dressed as a convict.

On his left, dressed in a Santa outfit, is Shauna Hoare, 21, his long- term girlfriend and the mother of his young daughter.

Shauna, who also goes by the surname Phillips, was charged yesterday with attempting to pervert the course of justice. She and Matthews will make a first appearance before magistrates today.

Also in fancy dress at the party were Becky’s father Darren Galsworthy, 51, dressed as a Roman centurion, and his partner Anjie, 49, dressed as an Egpytian. Anjie is Nathan Matthews’ mother.

The photograph was posted on Mr Galsworthy’s Facebook page on May 4, 2012, and has the caption “Christmas Boozup !!!”.

It emerged as Mr Galsworthy’s brother Joe released an emotional letter written to Becky two weeks after her disappearance in Bristol.

In it he said: “I refuse to show any anger towards the people who have stolen a piece of our hearts because they don’t deserve my anger, but what I will say, and share with the world, is that I love you so much and no matter what they have taken from us they could never take our memories or love.

“You were a shining light in this dark world and, as I lay in bed tonight, I’ll gaze at the stars and I know the brightest one I see will be you smiling back at me – you are at peace now my beautiful niece.”

Becky vanished from her home in Crown Hill, Bristol, on February 19. On Monday, police received information that Becky’s body had been dismembered at a property in Barton Close, Barton Hill, Bristol.

Body parts were discovered at the address and a private ambulance was seen leaving with a coffin thought to hold Becky’s remains.

Police were seen yesterday carrying a bright yellow sign which said ‘‘ do not enter – dangerous chemicals’’ into a property in Crown Hill.

A female officer was spotted taking the large sign, which had a skull and cross bones on it, into the house.

Five people are being questioned on suspicion of assisting an offender over the kidnap and murder of Becky.

They were named yesterday as Donovan Demetrius and his twin brother Karl, both 29, their younger brother Shannon, 23, Karl’s partner Jaydene Parsons, 23, and Jamie Ireland, also 23.

A district judge yesterday gave police more time to quiz them.

Locals said Jaydene and the Demetrius brothers all live in the home in Barton Close where body parts were found.

Mourners gathered at a local church to pay their respects to Becky.

A book of condolence was set up next to a candle and flowers at St Ambrose Church in Whitehall, Bristol.

The Reverend David James said: “Rebecca was a pupil of Summerhill Junior School just round the corner, so she would have come here every year for the Christmas carol service.

“She would have been here just a few years ago.

“As the events unfolded, it became less likely there would be a happy ending, but it’s the sheer barbarism of what has happened – people are shocked by that. I have reached out to the family, and I want them to know that difficult as it may be, God loves them and is with them.”

Another uncle of Becky, Sam Galsworthy, said: “She will live on in the hearts of all of us.”
