Police drop Clarkson attack inquiry

- By John Chapman

TOP Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson will not face police action over his attack on the producer who failed to arrange a hot meal for him.

The presenter has been axed by the BBC for hitting Oisin Tymon, splitting his lip, in a row after a long day’s filming.

But North Yorkshire Police said yesterday it had “completed its routine inquiries” and interviews into the incident and would “not be pursuing this matter any further”.

Mr Tymon has said he did not want to press charges against his former colleague.

The attack occurred at a remote North Yorkshire hotel after 54- year- old Clarkson was offered only a cold snack. Mr Tymon, 36, was also shouted at by the former Top Gear presenter in a torrent of verbal abuse during the incident last month.

He took himself to hospital with his injuries.

Clarkson reported what had happened to the BBC and was suspended.

The corporation has since announced the presenter’s contract will not be renewed.

The star received widespread public support in the aftermath of what was described as a “fracas”.

Cameron spoke out to say he hoped the row could be resolved and one million people signed a petition calling for the BBC to keep Clarkson.

But director- general Tony Hall ruled that “a line has been crossed”.

Top Gear, built around fast cars and off- colour jokes, is one of the most watched programmes on the planet. It sells to 214 countries worldwide and has an estimated global audience of 350 million, earning the BBC millions of pounds.

The future of the show’s other two presenters, Richard Hammond and James May, is unclear. Both men’s contracts have run out.
