Labour’s non- dom tax plan ‘ a total shambles’ When Nigel met Joey... the only way was Grimsby

- By Martyn Brown

NIGEL Farage went trawling for votes yesterday as he took to the sea with reality TV star Joey Essex to highlight the plight of Britain’s fishing industry.

The unlikely pair went on a boat trip from Grimsby which, the Ukip leader said, has been shattered by draconian European Union rules.

Mr Farage said: “It’s symbolic of what’s gone wrong. If we came here 40 years ago there were thousands of men working here and a massive trawler fleet, it was the biggest fishing port in the country.

Cool

“We joined the European Union and now have to share all our fish with all the other countries.

“Let’s take our country and our territorial waters back, let’s get our fishing industry back.”

He insisted that quitting the EU would help create thousands more jobs.

Before boarding the Humberside boat, Essex said that the only thing he knew about the party leader was he is a “really, really ‘ reem’ [‘ cool’] guy”. Mr Farage the Institute of Directors, said: “Attacking non- doms is a shrewd political move but the economics of the proposed reforms are unconvincing.” He warned it could see large numbers of successful businesses leave Britain.

In 2012- 13, 115,000 non- doms paid £ 8.2billion in UK taxes – up from £ 6billion under Labour in 2008- 9. quipped: “I think that’s good... I’m not sure.”

The star of The Only Way Is Essex is speaking to the leaders of all four major parties for a TV series to be aired later this month.

He told Mr Farage: “I’m trying to show the youth it’s good to vote.”

Mr Farage said: “What I’m going to try to do is give you my opinions, which you’ll either love or hate.”

He said later: “Over half the young people in Britain don’t vote at all. If some of the icons of youth like Joey here can actually look at this, spend a bit of time, understand this and form an opinion, perhaps you’ll get more young people voting.”

Both men have fishing connections. The Ukip leader is a keen angler and has a monthly column in a sea fishing magazine. Essex, 24, once worked at Billingsgate Fish Market in London.

A weekend poll showed Mr Farage facing a close battle for South Thanet constituency in Kent.

But the Ukip leader said yesterday: “I’ll get my nose on to that tape ahead of the others.”
