My panic after doctors wrongly told me I had cancer by Anita Harris

- By Cyril Dixon

ACTRESS Anita Harris has revealed how she almost underwent a needless double mastectomy after being wrongly diagnosed with breast cancer.

The 72- year- old star of Carry On Doctor said she was only spared the unnecessary operation after she had asked to postpone it because of her busy work schedule.

Miss Harris told doctors she also wanted to undergo further testing for the cancer – her results came back negative.

She said: ‘ I’m not blaming anyone but I’ll always be aware of what might have been if I hadn’t asked for more tests.

“That particular episode has to be the greatest challenge of my life.

“After six weeks I was told by doctors they now thought they were wrong.

Angels

“I didn’t have cancer and didn’t need a double mastectomy.

“If I hadn’t been working and begged for extra time, well, you have to believe in God or the angels or whatever.”

The near- miss came four years ago when she was rehearsing for the musical Stepping Out with former Coronation Street actor Brian Capron.

She said she and husband Mike Margolis “almost collapsed” when they learned she had the disease, which kills 12,000 women in the UK a year.

Miss Harris added in her interview with Yours Magazine that, since the episode, she has thanked God for every single day.

She appeared in Carry On Doctor in 1967. In the 1970s, she was a cabaret star performing in Las Vegas and at the Talk Of The Town in London.
