Omega- 3 ‘ is vital for brain growth’
A DIET of oily fi sh and other foods, like eggs, which are rich in omega- 3 fatty acids, are essential for brain growth and development throughout our lives, a new study has found.
Research on people suffering from genetic mutations in their brains found they were unable to absorb a fat called lysophosphatidylcholines ( LPCs) – composed of essential fatty acids such as omega- 3 – from the blood.
Crucial
As a result they suffered from smaller brains, which could result in fatalities or cause intellectual disabilities and loss of limb control.
The study, by Duke- NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore, has for the fi rst time highlighted the crucial role of these fats in human brain growth and function.
Oily fi sh such as salmon are a rich source of omega- 3s, as are walnuts and fl axseeds. Associate Professor David Silver said: “Our work confi rms the essential role of LPCs in brain development.”
