Calais Jungle is set ablaze

-

THE Calais “Jungle” camp erupted in violence and flames as migrant gangs clashed then burned piles of donated clothes and blankets in protest at their conditions.

Armed riot squads escorted fire crews and paramedics on to the site to treat the injured and tackle the blaze.

Two migrants were hospitalised after being hurt in the fighting and more than 330lbs of clothing and blankets were destroyed.

Trouble first broke out when gangs of Ethiopians began warring on Sunday afternoon.

Fearing the blaze would spread to dry brush on dunes around the site, close to Calais ferry port, firemen moved in.

Small fires were started throughout the night around the camp which houses 3,000 migrants.
