Yours for £ 15k... Britain’s cheapest flat

- By Sarah O’Grady Property Correspondent

A FLAT on the market for £ 15,000 is the cheapest home in the UK... and even boasts its own parking space.

The second- floor, one- bed property will be a steal for those struggling to get on the housing ladder in Preston, Lancs.

An online estate agent scoured the UK to find 24 homes on the market with an asking price of less than £ 20,000, the cost of the average wedding.

Four one- bedroom flats came in at the same cost as a once- ina- lifetime trip to the Maldives. The Preston flat is situated in a block of 40 and enjoys shared outside space.

Another is in the Scottish Borders town of Hawick.

No interior pictures are shown of the third flat – located in a traditional two- storey villa in Dunoon on the Firth of Clyde – but the village looks nice.

A third- floor flat in Barrow- in-Furness, Cumbria is the fourth.

At £ 2,000 less than the cost of a brand- new Mini, the value of these homes is only half that of the average deposit, now standing at more than £ 31,000 and unaffordable for many.

HouseSimple.com carried out the survey to find the cheapest homes in the UK to compare with the average UK home at just under £ 300,000.

Alex Gosling, the online estate agents’ chief executive officer, said: “They may not be much to look at – and they may need a little TLC – but it does seem crazy in this day and age, when the average UK house price is so high, that you can still buy a property for a fraction of that price.”

Mr Gosling added that starting off in the cheapest home the UK has to offer may be a good investment because buyers can make money on the properties by doing them up and selling them on.

He said: “Even if you decide these properties are not to your taste, £ 20,000 could be a very nice deposit towards your dream property.”
