Losa’s Arsenal back on course

- Bruce Archer

PEDRO Martinez Losa admits Arsenal Ladies are still in transition despite being in the Women’s FA Cup final.

The Gunners have now gone three seasons without winning the league after years of domination in which they claimed 14 top-flight titles dating back to 1991.

Arsenal face Chelsea at Wembley tomorrow hoping to add to their 13 FA Cup wins and stop Emma Hayes’ side retaining the trophy, after lifting it for the first time last season.

Last season’s Double winners have usurped Arsenal and, along with Manchester City, have a 100 per cent record in the league this season.

But manager Losa insists his team are back on course and a place at Wembley – which is showcasing its second SSE Women’s FA Cup final – proves that.

“Since they moved the FA Cup to Wembley every team and every manager has been crazy to be here for the final,” he said. “For me, the main part since I’ve been in charge of the team was to be in a position to win. Last year we couldn’t. I had to be in the stands watching the game.

“We understand that we were in a transition moment where a lot of things need to progress little by little, and we’re still in that moment.

“So we want to win but also we want to keep growing in our project and doing good things.”

Chelsea manager Hayes says history, recent or otherwise, counts for nothing.

“It’s about managing the game plan and managing the opponent,” she said.

“The opponent happens to be our London rival who had a deep history in the competition but, just as our Double-winning ways are out of the window on the day, so is their 13-year history – it’s irrelevant.

“It’s about two teams who show up for the occasion.”
