British mum held ‘for abandoning boys to go boozing in Benidorm’

- By Leda Reynolds

A BRITISH mother has appeared in court in Benidorm after allegedly leaving her nine-year-old twin sons to roam the streets at night while she went drinking.

The young boys spent hours searching the roads around the Finestrat resort near Benidorm in Costa Blanca looking for their mother who is said to have vanished after giving them money to buy some food.

The brothers allegedly decided to split up to hunt for their mother, who has not been named, and one of the children was later spotted wandering alone through the busy streets by a couple, who took him to a police station around 10pm.

Officers drove the child back to the holiday apartment where the family was staying and discovered his brother lying in the doorway.

Police launched a nightlong search for the 40-yearold mother but, as they were unable to find her, the children were taken into care.

A spokesman for Spain’s National Police said the woman was arrested on Thursday.

The spokesman said: “Police in Benidorm have arrested a 40-year-old British woman for abandoning her nine-year-old twins in an area full of bars to continue drinking.

“At 10pm on July 27 a couple came into a police station with a nine-year-old boy they’d found walking around the streets looking for his mum.

“Officers began searching for the mum and the other child and found the minor three hours later lying at the entrance to his holiday apartment in Finestrat having walked across town to reach it.

“The search for their mum continued throughout the night until she was found at 8am the following morning sleeping peacefully inside her holiday flat.”

The spokesman declined to name the woman.

She appeared before a court at a private hearing but the results have not been made public.
