£ Total A MUSICIAN’S stolen 18th-century violin has been retrieved after a woman tried to pawn it for just £50.

Krysia Osostowicz, 57, had the £200,000 violin snatched on Tuesday night when she was on her way back home from a Radio 3 performance.

She had put the instrument down as she unlocked her bike outside London’s Brixton tube station and within seconds it was gone.

The professional violinist, who was taught by Yehudi Menuhin, said the feeling was like “losing a child”.

She visited several music shops and pawn shops in the belief her instrument would probably be sold.

And on Thursday morning she had a call from a Cash Converters after a woman had tried to pawn it for 400 times less than its real value.

In hushed tones, the manager at the branch in Streatham, south London, told her a woman had come in and tried to sell the violin for £50.

Krysia, who has recorded 30 albums, said: “I had left my details at this particular branch.

“I knew somebody might try to sell it.”

The manager called the police who arrested the woman and took the violin into custody at Brixton police station.

Krysia, from Herne Hill in south London, said: “They now won’t let me take it back because they are saying it is evidence. It’s frustrating.”

The violin, made in Venice in 1720, has toured with Krysia for 20 years.
