I hope I’ll be third time lucky

- Rob Maul

JAMIE MURRAY is determined not to fluff another Olympic venture as he heads to Brazil.

With younger brother Andy – the Wimbledon singles champion – Jamie will try for a third crack at the men’s doubles.

Jamie has enjoyed a superb 2016. In January he won the Australian Open doubles title with Brazilian Bruno Soares and reached No1 in the world rankings.

However, in the Olympics, the Murrays have had a torrid time as a partnership. In Beijing in 2008, they lost in the second round; in 2012, they crashed out at the first stage.

As a result, Jamie, 30, has channelled all his energies to ensure it is third time lucky.

They will hope to translate their Davis Cup-winning form to the Olympics.

“The Olympics are a unique event,” he said. “It’s once every four years and so there is extra pressure because you want to do well.

“If you stuff it up, you have to wait another four years to change things. London was an anti-climax for me.

“I didn’t perform well at all. And I want to try to make amends for that.

“The doubles this year will be extremely strong. The best singles players will all be involved. But we have a chance to do well. Andy and I are both playing some of the best tennis of our careers.

“It’s a really exciting event to be a part of. It’s an honour to represent my country.”

Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis has withdrawn from the singles after failing to recover from an elbow injury.

The world No42 lost to eventual champion Andy Murray in the last 16 of London 2012.
