Matthew ready for big push

- Nick Stamford

MIRIM LEE yesterday kept her lead at the British Open at Woburn.

The South Korean heads the field by one shot after a secondround 71, to move to 11 under par.

Lee, 25, who made a course record 10-underpar 62 in the first round, is ahead of China’s Shanshan Feng and Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn, both tied second.

Scotland’s Catriona Matthew scored a stunning 65 to finish nine under par, two shots behind Lee.

“It was one of my best rounds for a while,” said Matthew. “To give myself a chance on Sunday would be great. I’m sure there will be a great atmosphere.”

After this tournament, Matthew goes to Rio for the women’s golf event.

She said: “It’s a huge achievement to become an Olympian. Growing up I never thought I would be at the Olympics and this is probably the only chance I am going to get in my career.

“I’m really looking forward to the whole atmosphere, staying in the village, seeing some of the other sports.”

England’s Charley Hull is tied in 10th place on five under.

Woburn is actually her home event and the 20-year-old enjoyed the comforts of the course. Hull made five birdies between holes seven and 12, but was put on the clock from 13 to 16 because of slow play.

“It was raining so I had to rush and bogeyed the 16th hole, it is stuff you have to deal with,” she said.

“I am usually a fast player but happy with the way I came through the middle part.”
