Health alert as Britain bakes
BOILING Britain is set to get even warmer – with tomorrow likely to be the hottest day of the year so far.
And the good news is the sunny weather should last through the weekend in a sweltering end to August.
Thermometers will rocket into the mid-80Fs today before possibly hitting 93F (34C) over the next 36 hours.
The South will enjoy the warmest temperatures, while the North will experience highs of about 70F.
The sweltering plume from the Continent will peak tomorrow, but could lead to isolated thunderstorms.
Tomorrow’s temperature could better the 2016 high of 92.3F recorded at Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, last month.
Experts say after a slightly cooler dip at the end of the week another surge of warm air from the South will push thermometers back into the 80Fs for the weekend.
Met Office forecaster Emma Sharples said: “Wednesday will be fairly warm with temperatures hitting 86F in parts of the East, with the North looking at highs of 70F.
“Temperatures on Friday will drop into the high 60Fs but then it looks as though we have another pulse of warm air coming up from the South at the weekend, possibly pushing them back to 86F.”
Netweather forecaster Jo Farrow said: “Thursday has the potential to be even hotter – 93F is possible.”
Britons were given a taste of things to come yesterday as temperatures soared across the whole country.
The extreme heat has sparked warnings for elderly and vulnerable people to take extra care.
Dr Angie Bone, of Public Health England, said: “Summer heat can bring real health risks.
“Now is the time to think about how best to keep cool and safe.”
