Summer may now be on the way out but September still has plenty to offer, from Blackpool’s sparkling spectacle to Southampton’s boating bonanza, says MELISSA BROBBY Blackpool Illuminations, Lancashire Blackpool’s annual illuminations will set its skyline alight with displays and animatronics from September 2 to November 6. Dazzling visitors since 1879, this spectacle uses more than a million bulbs to twinkle along six miles of Blackpool’s iconic promenade.
Enter the magical Alice’s Garden with illuminated scenes from her adventures in Wonderland and boldly go to the Golden Mile, where the 50th anniversary of Star Trek will be celebrated with a projection display and the opening of the new Star Trek Exhibition. Chatsworth Country Fair, Derbyshire Sample a taste of country life at Chatsworth’s Country Fair from September 2-4, where you’ll be able to take part in some country activities from clay pigeon shooting to archery.
Pick up cookery tips from celebrity chefs Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, while the children can keep themselves amused at the old time fairground – and don’t miss the chance to meet Olympian Jessica Ennis-Hill, who will be opening the event. Southampton Boat Show, Hampshire Southern England’s biggest marine show is on from September 16-25, where boats of all shapes and sizes will be on display.
Climb aboard tall ship Artemis and uncover the history of this imposing three-masted sailing barque; enjoy a spectacular display by the Royal Navy Parachute Display Team and meet the British Sailing Team fresh from their medal-winning performances in Rio.
Visitors will also be able to experience dinghy sailing and power boating. Gravity Fields Festival, Lincolnshire Science, arts and heritage will come alive during this festival from September 21-25, celebrating the legacy of Lincolnshire-born Sir Isaac Newton, 350 years after his groundbreaking work on the laws of light and gravity.
