Gregg chips at Mary in deep-fat fryer row

- By Giles Sheldrick

GREAT British Bake Off star Mary Berry and the MasterChef judge Gregg Wallace have fallen out over deep-fat fryers.

Mary said last week that she does not think any home should contain the cooking appliance.

Now Wallace has hit back saying that is an attack on the British way of life.

He added that while “we probably did use the fryer a little bit too much” when he was young, fatty food is OK in moderation, adding: “Our nation was built on chips and spam fritters.”

Berry, 81, told the BBC’s Radio 4 Today programme that deep-fat fryers are dangerous because they cause fires as well as being detrimental to health.

She said: “Nowadays everybody eats in the kitchen and I don’t want the smell of frying while I’m eating.

“I do have oven chips from time to time when the grandchildren come to give them a treat. I usually do things in the oven rather than frying. I think it’s unhealthy.”

Wallace blasted fellow BBC star Mary, saying: “I love Mary dearly but this is an attack on our British way of life.” Mary is back on screen in the new series of Bake Off.
