Wayne’s playing No10 for me too

start in Trnava against a Slovakia side which held England to a goalless draw at Euro 2016, while Allardyce is also considering giving West Ham’s Michail Antonio his international debut.

“It may be that Wayne is listed as a midfielder, but he is playing behind the frontman at Manchester United and that, for me, puts it back where he started,” said Allardyce.

He said also it was Rooney’s return to a No10 role that was the reason behind his decision to omit Ross Barkley from his squad.

He wants two players for every position and sees Tottenham’s Dele Alli as the other No10 in his 23-man party.

Allardyce also defended his decision to demote Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford to the Under 21s and plans to watch him against Norway next Tuesday.

Rashford grabbed United’s winner against Hull at the weekend to continue his upward trajectory, but Allardyce says he has enough goalscoring threat in his senior squad even though Kane has yet to score this season.

“At the moment we have Sturridge, Kane, and Vardy,” said Allardyce. “We wouldn’t expect Harry to be dry for too much longer.

“He’s made a massive impact in the last few years and we felt the experience with the U21s would be the best thing for Marcus.

“I will be watching the U21s at Colchester. That performance, if it is as stunning as it was for United, then next time round I’ll put him in the squad. If you look at Antonio’s record it’s outstanding from a wide position, not just his service but also the goals he scores. Sterling too – he’s scoring goals, not just providing them.”
