Honesty is best policy with travel insurance

-

ollowing a friend’s recommendation to use website PayingTooMuch.com to compare travel insurance, Mandi Keen was able to enjoy a relaxing family holiday to Cyprus this year and only had to pay £30 for her family’s insurance, despite having to declare that her son, Morgan, suffers with Type 1 Diabetes.

“I was worried that by declaring Morgan’s condition the price of our holiday would become unaffordable. I even considered not mentioning his diabetes to the insurers, but was worried about what would happen should we ever need to claim” says mum Mandi, 47 from Bognor Regis.

When it comes to insurance, honesty is always the best policy and just because a condition is declared, it does not necessarily mean that the cost of the cover will rise.

“I’d expected to pay £100s extra for cover for Morgan, but when I tried PayingTooMuch.com, I found out it was only an extra £10 for his condition to be covered on a policy insuring the whole family!” says a delighted Mandi. “I was amazed at the price – just £30 – for three of us to travel to Cyprus for 10 days.”

Many families are not aware that they need to be totally honest when it comes to declaring pre-existing medical conditions on a travel insurance policy. This includes conditions like mild asthma and high blood pressure. Declaring all previous conditions may add a small sum to your insurance, however it may save shelling out for much bigger costs should someone fall ill on holiday and not have the appropriate cover in place.

“I wouldn’t want to take any chances when travelling” says Mandi, as Morgan (now 14) did once fall very ill on a flight back to England at age 8, which is how his diabetes was diagnosed.

Failure to disclose pre-existing conditions could result in a policy being invalid and subsequent claims not being paid.
