Palace in loan swoop for Jack

- Chris Stocks Paul Joyce

ALEX HALES had no idea he had smashed the highest one-day score by an England batsman in a record-breaking display from Eoin Morgan’s men.

Hales’ 171 against Pakistan at Trent Bridge overtook the 167 made by Robin Smith against Australia in 1993 – with England’s 444-3 the highest total by any team in ODI history, surpassing Sri Lanka’s 443-9 against Holland in 2006.

The opener said: “It’s a special feeling for us, as a team we have still not reached our potential and it’s an exciting time to be a part of it.” On his own record, the Nottinghamshire batsman said: “I didn’t know at the time. I only realised when the cheer went round the ground. You’ve got to enjoy moments like this.” CRYSTAL PALACE hope to land Jack Wilshere on a seasonlong loan in an eye-catching move ahead of tonight’s transfer deadline.

The Arsenal midfielder met Palace manager Alan Pardew for talks yesterday after being inundated with interest from more than 20 clubs after Arsenal agreed to make him available for a temporary move.

Other teams include Celtic, Watford, West Brom and Bournemouth while AS Roma and Valencia offered options abroad.

Pardew was quick to register his interest in the 24-year-old and Palace are now in pole position to land the midfielder, who would command a loan fee while Arsenal would also want his £80,000-a-week wages covered.

Their only condition was Wilshere would not be allowed to move to a top-four club.

The chance to stay in London, close to his family, would appeal to Wilshere as he seeks to relaunch his fortunes after being left out of Sam Allardyce’s first England squad.

Palace also agreed a season-long loan deal for Chelsea striker Loic Remy yesterday to follow on from the recent club-record £27m signing of Christian Benteke.
