‘King of golf’ Arnold Palmer dies aged 87

- By David Pilditch

GOLF legend Arnold Palmer, one of the most charismatic players in the sport’s history, has died aged 87.

Tributes poured in last night for the seven-time Major winner, one of the most beloved figures in the game.

The American died on Sunday at hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he was undergoing heart tests.

Palmer, whose powerful swing and ready smile attracted millions of loyal fans known as “Arnie’s Army”, celebrated his birthday earlier this month.

Superstar

Yesterday flags flew at half-mast at Hazeltine National golf club in Minnesota, where the US take on Europe in the Ryder Cup this week.

US captain Davis Love said his side will “draw from Arnold’s strength and determination to inspire us” when they fight to avoid an unprecedented fourth straight defeat.

European captain Darren Clarke said: “Like everyone in golf, we are saddened by the news about Arnold. He was a global superstar who transcended our sport. ”

Amy Palmer Saunders, the younger of the star’s two daughters, said: “My family and I are deeply moved by the outpouring of support and love we have received from the countless friends and admirers of my father.

“These first hours have been challenging but we are comforted knowing he was loved by so many.

“Words cannot begin to express the gratitude we have for the many people who have offered to help us in this time of sadness. My father would be so pleased to know he is being thought of and recognised this way.”

A four-time US Masters champion, Palmer was unable to perform his customary role as “honorary starter” at Augusta in April alongside Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player – who made up golf’s “Big Three” – and was frail as he was helped to a seat on the first tee.

Nicklaus, who enjoyed a long, friendly rivalry with Palmer, said: “I wish I had another chance to talk to him but I am so glad we talked a couple of weeks ago on his birthday.”

Palmer was born on September 10, 1929, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.
