12,700 lovers? I never had time, says Beatty

- By Allister Hagger

HOLLYWOOD heart-throb Warren Beatty has laughed off claims that he had slept with almost 13,000 women.

Biographer Peter Biskind said in 2010 that the Dick Tracy star, now 79, had bedded 12,775 women throughout his career.

Speaking to AARP, a US magazine aimed at the older generation, in his first interview in 20 years Beatty said: “Think about it, sleeping with 12,775 people. That would mean not just that there were multiple people a day, but that there was no repetition.”

Beatty waited until he was in his mid-50s before he got married to actress Annette Bening in 1992.

Before that he had a string of lovers, reportedly including Carly Simon, Madonna, Julie Christie, Barbara Streisand, Cher and Joan Collins.

Of his past lovers Beatty said: “Look, I never misled anyone. And… and I’m a nice guy.”

In the interview Beatty said that he always wanted a family even if he and Bening started late.

Beatty said: “I waited a long time to be married. When you don’t get married until you’re 54... well, as Arthur Miller said: ‘It comes with the territory’.

Struggle

“I always knew I wanted to have children. I wanted to do it well, and I wanted to do it with someone who felt the same way. “I’m an attentive father, I have to struggle somewhat not to be overly attentive. It’s a burden to be the child of not only one famous parent, but two.” Beatty and Bening met on the set of Bugsy in 1991 and Beatty said that while he wanted to be with her, she was not interested. Beatty and Bening have four children, Stephen, 24, Benjamin, 22, Isabel, 19, and Ella, 16. Bening opened up about her husband in the interview and said he was a good listener. She said: “There’s always a part of what he’s doing that’s private, but we talk a lot about everything. Some people pay lip service to listening to others and they’re really not listening. “He does. He loves actors, and while he’s shooting he’s always interested in what people are saying. He’s a terrific audience.” Beatty’s first film in 18 years Rules Don’t Apply comes out later this year.
