How Harry Redknapp ran over his wife
THE WIFE of former football boss Harry Redknapp was recovering yesterday after he ran over her foot with his Range Rover in a “freak accident”.
Mr Redknapp, 69, was dropping Sandra, his wife of 49 years, at the shops when he drove off with her coat trapped in the door.
She was heard screaming in agony and there was blood in the road after the incident four miles from the couple’s £5 million home in the Sandbanks area of Poole, Dorset.
She suffered ligament damage to her right ankle and had surgery at Bournemouth Hospital.
Speaking outside the couple’s house after bringing his wife home from hospital, Mr Redknapp said she was now “good”. He added: “She’s fine, it’s very lucky. It was a freak accident.”
Mrs Redknapp, also 69, was on crutches with her leg in a cast as she hobbled into the house.
He put a supportive arm around her as she approached the front door.
The ex-West Ham winger and Tottenham, West Ham and Portsmouth boss said: “She had gone behind the car to cross over the road.
“And as I went to drive off I sort of drove over her ankle, basically. I thought she had crossed.”
He added: “My wife’s fine. She had an operation that went well. If the full weight of the car had run over the ankle, God knows what would’ve happened to her and her foot.”
Mrs Redknapp has been in the audience at BBC TV’s Strictly Come Dancing, cheering daughter-in-law Louise.
Louise’s husband, TV soccer pundit Jamie Redknapp, said: “My mum is on the way to a full recovery. The only thing she’s upset about is that she might not be fit to watch Louise this Saturday.” A witness said: “There was a lot of blood and Harry was beside himself.”
A shopkeeper said: “He pulled away and she fell, hitting her head.”
Police said the incident had not been reported.
