The champion, the singer and some chicken sacks
ONE Night In Miami is a play on in London set on the night in 1964 when Cassius Clay (as he was) became world champ and celebrated with Sam Cooke, American footballer Jim Brown and Malcolm X (instrumental in persuading Clay to join the Nation of Islam and become Muhammad Ali). It’s wonderful. It also reminded me how as a child I was always puzzled by the lyrics of Sam Cooke’s Twistin’ The Night Away. Why was the man in evening clothes dancing with the “chicken sacks” and what were “chicken sacks” anyway? Some catering thing? A long time later I found out he was dancing with the “chick in slacks”.
