UK ‘can no longer duck the issue of immigration’
NEW immigrants should swear an “oath of integration” and schools must teach British values to ethnic minorities, a hard-hitting report warned yesterday.
Social policy expert Dame Louise Casey said the UK could “no longer duck difficult issues” highlighted by her independent review into ethnic segregation.
Listing a string of concerns, Dame Louise said some Asian women are being denied basic rights in their communities.
Segregation is at “worryingly high levels” and officials are often frightened to challenge cultural and religious practices for fear of being branded racist.
Children must learn about tolerance, democracy and respect, while an oath of integration on arrival will ensure migrants know how they are expected to behave.
She said: “Inequality in highly segregated areas is getting worse, not better. Women who have lived here for years are not allowed out of the house without their men’s permission.”
Folly
She also pointed to an “unprecedented” scale of immigration.
This has led to the proportion of non-UK national pupils at a Sheffield school rising from under five per cent to 95 per cent.
And segregation has led some migrant children to think Britain has a majority Asian population.
Dame Louise was asked to produce a report by David Cameron last year amid concern that young Muslims are being radicalised.
Ukip immigration spokesman John Bickley added: “The report is an excoriating critique of the Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties’ support of mass immigration, multiculturalism and political correctness.”
Harun Khan, secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, said: “Any initiative that facilitates better integration of all Britons should be welcomed.”
But Mohammed Shafiq, of Muslim group the Ramadhan Foundation, called the report “inflammatory and divisive”.
Prime Minister Theresa May hailed it as a “significant piece of work”. She added: “We will look closely at what she has said and what her recommendations are.” The Casey report says some Muslim women are denied basic rights by men
