Trump is man of the Time

- By David Pilditch

DONALD Trump has beaten Hillary Clinton again – this time after a prestigious US magazine named him Person of the Year.

Ukip leader Nigel Farage was also on Time’s list of people who “had the greatest influence, for better or worse, on the events of the year”.

Pop star Beyonce and Russian President Vladimir Putin were among the other top 10 finalists.

Announcing Mr Trump as the winner, Time’s managing editor Nancy Gibbs said the billionaire’s election victory gave “a longoverdue rebuke to an entrenched and arrogant governing class”.

She added: “It’s hard to measure the scale of his disruption.”

And she said naming Mr Trump as the winner was “the easiest decision” Time had ever made. The magazine said the President-elect had redrawn political rules and his controversial campaign against Clinton, who was also shortlisted, had captured the imagination of US voters.

After the announcement Mr Trump, 70, said: “It’s a great honour, it means a lot.

“It’s a very important magazine and I’ve been lucky enough to be on the cover many times this year.”

But he was not so impressed with a caption accompanying his picture on the front page of the latest edition of the magazine which said “President of the divided states of America.”

He said: “Well I think putting divided is snarky. I didn’t divide ’em. We’re going to put it back together and we’re going to have a country that’s very well-healed.”

Last year Mr Trump lost out to German chancellor Angela Merkel for the title. At the time he tweeted that Time “would never pick me as person of the year despite being the big favourite”.

The magazine invites readers to vote on who they think has earned the title, but the final decision is made by editors.

The last UK winner was Queen, on her accession to throne in 1952.

Controversial choices for Time’s Person of the Year in the past have included Adolf Hitler in 1938 and Joseph Stalin – first in 1939 and then 1942. the the
