Reus a real pain for Zidane

- By David Rallis

MARCO REUS came off the bench to take the gloss off Zinedine Zidane’s record run with Real Madrid last night.

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder, left, struck two minutes from time as his side came back from two goals down to snatch a 2-2 draw at the Bernabeu and take top spot in Group F.

It meant Real qualified as runners-up but the 10-time European champions had the consolation of equalling a club-record 34-match unbeaten start to the season in all competitions, last achieved in the 1988-89 season under Dutchman Leo Beenhakker.

It is a remarkable achievement by former Real and France idol Zidane, in his first season in charge after taking over from Rafa Benitez in the summer. Zidane knew his men needed to win to leapfrog Dortmund and Karim Benzema’s goals in each half – a close range finish from Dani Carvajal’s cross then a header after James Rodiguez had done the spadework – looked to have settled the argument in Madrid’s favour.

But Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang set up a nervy finale with a goal on the hour – his club’s 20th in the group stage, and a Champions League record – before Reus put the icing on the Germans’ cake.

Lyon needed to beat Sevilla by two clear goals to go through to the last 16 as runners-up in Group H.

It was not for want of trying as Corentin Tolisso and Mathieu Valbuena hit the bar but a 0-0 draw was as good as it got.

Juventus clinched top spot by beating Dinamo Zagreb 2-0.
