Ukip poll win would be ‘victory for Brexit’
UKIP leader Paul Nuttall yesterday declared that winning next week’s Stoke Central by-election would be “game, set and match for Brexit”.
Mr Nuttall, who is challenging to be elected MP on February 23, urged voters to “send a powerful signal” to MPs and peers plotting to block Britain’s departure from the EU.
He claimed that Ukip snatching the previously Labour-held seat would dispel fears that Brexit could be sabotaged.
The contest intensified yesterday when Labour’s candidate was forced to apologise for a string of abusive remarks about women on Twitter.
Gareth Snell had described panellists on ITV’s Loose Women as “squabbling sour-faced ladies”, called presenter Janet Street-Porter a “polished **** ” and said a “speccy blonde girl” on BBC show The Apprentice should “**** off”.
Mr Snell expressed regret for the remarks which he said were made a number of years ago.
“Nevertheless, I shouldn’t have tweeted those comments and I apologise for the offence they have caused,” he added.
A Ukip spokesman said: “The Labour candidate is in danger of coming across as a foul-mouthed young man with a lot of growing up still to do.
“The people of Stoke-on-Trent deserve much better than this to represent them in the House of Commons.”
Nearly 70 per cent of Stoke voters supported Leave in the June 23 poll.
Mr Nuttall said: “Ukip winning in Stoke Central will be game, set and match for Brexit.
“Every voter in the constituency has the opportunity to send a powerful signal to Remain MPs sitting in Leave constituencies that they’d better not attempt to frustrate the will of the people.”
