SCARLETT JOHANSSON MARRIAGE FOR LIFE IS NOT NORMAL

- By Giles Sheldrick

ACTRESS Scarlett Johansson has opened up about marriage after splitting from her second husband – saying she does not feel it is “natural” to stay with one person.

The 32-year-old US star revealed she thinks it is hard work to make a monogamous relationship succeed – and admitted she could get “skewered” for saying so.

The New York-born Hollywood icon announced her split from French advertising guru Romain Dauriac, the father of two-year-old daughter Rose, last month. Their marriage had lasted just two years.

Before that, she was wed to Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds for only three years between 2008 and 2011.

Skewered

Now Scarlett, who is regularly feted as one of the world’s most beautiful women, has spoken about being unlucky in finding lasting love in an interview with Playboy magazine.

Insisting she had been faithful in all her relationships while they lasted, she said: “I think the idea of marriage is very romantic. It’s a beautiful idea, and the practice of it can be a beautiful thing.”

But she added: “I don’t think it’s natural to be a monogamous person. I might be skewered for that but I think it’s work. It’s a lot of work.

“And the fact that it is such work for so many people – for everyone – proves that it is not a natural thing.

“It’s something I have a lot of respect for and have participated in but I think it definitely goes against some instinct to look beyond.”

Scarlett – who has appeared in a string of hit movies including the Avengers series – said marriage “felt different” when she tied the knot with Dauriac shortly after Rose was born.

She said: “I had a really young baby at the time, so that also our family dynamic was just different. I don’t know.

“Whatever that is, the thing you can’t fully put words to, it changed.

“I had a baby and my husband was coming from another country and becoming a citizen of this country. It was a huge transition for both of us.”

However, Scarlett, whose new sci-fi drama Ghost In The Shell opens in cinemas next month, said becoming a mother had been “the best thing” that ever happened to her.

She said: “Just the process of being pregnant and giving birth was incredibly profound.

“Also surrendering to the fact that with babies, and particularly infants and toddlers, you have to let go of your expectations and of whatever instincts you have to take control.

“Being a mother you have to make decisions all the time that affect this person who is completely dependent on you.

“But you also have to surrender to the experience, and that in itself is really liberating to me. For me, it’s the best thing that has ever happened. Ever.”
