Poll win will boost ‘swift clean’ Brexit

- By Macer Hall

DEFIANT Paul Nuttall yesterday pledged to keep up his fight for a “swift and clean” Brexit that will “make our country great again”.

The Ukip leader, who is challenging to win next week’s Stoke-on-Trent by-election, used a keynote conference speech to insist that Labour was “on the run” in the seat.

And he said a Ukip victory will help to ensure that Theresa May’s Government does not back down from delivering Brexit.

“The referendum was the beginning of the end. We Ukip members have got to see the job through. We want our country back and we are going to get it,” he told Ukip grassroots activists.

Mr Nuttall’s speech to the Ukip spring conference in Bolton was his first since succeeding Nigel Farage as leader. He appeared close to tears as the party faithful gave him a standing ovation when he asked for their backing after a week of Labour attacks.

The Ukip leader hit out at a “co-ordinated, cruel and almost evil smear campaign” that he said was being run against him: “I will not allow them to break me and I will not allow them to break Ukip.”

Mr Nuttall questioned whether the Prime Minister can “walk the walk” when it comes to ensuring Britain really does leave the EU.

And he said the leadership of the Labour party had been “hijacked” by a clique of “north London intellectuals” more interested in talking about “Islington dinner party” issues than the interests of working class voters.
