Joe’s trick a Wigan treat

JOE BURGESS scripted yesterday’s Dacia World Club Challenge to perfection as his hat-trick saw Wigan crowned the planet’s best club side.

In only his second appearance since returning to the Warriors after one season in the NRL – initially with Sydney Roosters and then South Sydney Rabbitohs – Burgess ran amok.

The 22-year-old England winger, a product of Wigan’s vaunted academy, simply blew Cronulla away to seal a record-breaking fourth world title win for Wigan.

Shaun Wane’s side rode their luck at times as the Aussie champions had two first-half tries chalked off, but there was no denying that Wigan, with a homegrown heart to their team, merited the victory.

Warrington had beaten Brisbane Broncos on Saturday so the chants of “2-0 to the Super League” in the closing stages of yesterday’s main event at a euphoric DW Stadium was music to the ears of watching RFL supremo Nigel Wood with the World Cup looming later this year.
