Man of 86 held over stab death

A BRITISH pensioner has been arrested after he allegedly stabbed his wife to death at a Spanish retirement home before turning the knife on himself.

The 86-year-old, named locally as Ronald Stenning, was yesterday under police guard in hospital after a life-saving operation following the death of his wife Margaret, 79.

The couple recently moved from a luxury Spanish house to the Orpea El Campello retirement home near Alicante on the Costa Blanca.

The incident on Sunday is understood to have taken place in the couple’s room at the complex, which houses 134 people and includes a unit for those with dementia.

A psychiatrist is waiting to examine Mr Stenning at an Alicante hospital to determine whether he is fit to go before a judge.
