Surf’s up! Penguins rule the waves

- By Anil Dawar

THEY may not have the right gear but these Gentoo penguins appear to know how to surf a wave.

Photographer Elmar Weiss, 46, from Hamburg, caught the bold birds in action on a trip to the Falkland Islands.

He said: “The penguins look like they are surfing.

“It’s amazing to see how skilful they are.

“They seem to enjoy to playing in the waves.”

The Falklands in the South Atlantic are home to the largest population of Gentoo penguins in the world, with more than 121,500 breeding pairs.

Elmar added: “The penguins were hunting for fish and krill in the ocean.

“They are returning to the colony to feed their chicks.”

But the “surfing” is a trick of the lens.

Elmar added: “If a Gentoo jumps out of a wave, he lands on his feet, the wave behind him.

“If you take a photo in the right moment, it seems the penguin is surfing.” On board...the birds frolic in the tossing surf off the Falklands
