should we shop irresponsible dog owners?

Yes

SO Liverpool is planning to reward those who provide photographic evidence that leads to the conviction of dog owners who allow their dogs to foul streets, parks and other public places and but then fail to clean up afterwards (“Free council tax if you shop a dog owner who fails to scoop”, February 18).

It’s a great idea but how these pictures will be used to convict or even trace offenders is problematic, what with privacy and human rights laws.

But congratulations to Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson for exercising some genuine imagination.

No

ARE we in such a desperate state that we’re relying on members of the public to snoop on dogs’ poop and then informing on their owners to the authorities?

Isn’t this all a bit Stasi, like when the East Germans had around 90,000 employees whose business it was to spy and then inform on millions of its citizens?

I agree that dog mess on the streets is appalling. But don’t blame the dogs, blame the irresponsible owners who are too pig-ignorant to think of others.

Maybe we should pay dog owners for every bag they fill with poop.
