Racist who spat in baby’s face avoids jail
A RACIST spat into the face of a nine-month-old baby girl before screaming “white people shouldn’t breed” at her horrified mother.
Rezzas Abdulla, 33, targeted little Layla-Jean Wilson as she sat in her pushchair in South Shields, Tyne and Wear.
Abdulla, who has two previous convictions for race-hate incidents, was later tracked down through CCTV. He was convicted of racially aggravated common assault for the attack in January last year but failed to attend court.
Yesterday Abdulla avoided prison and was handed an eight-month suspended jail term at Newcastle Crown Court. Recorder Darren Preston ruled “society” would be better served by Abdulla continuing a psychiatric treatment programme.
The child’s mother Rebecca Telford, 25, said: “I think he has got off lightly. I am not racist at all but I honestly think if it was the other way round and I had been abusive towards him, then I would have been treated differently.”
