CLEARLY a few people chained to a car are not going to persuade supporters of a third runway at Heathrow to change their minds.

As such, yesterday’s so-called protest was not a genuine bid to affect political change. Instead, it was nothing more than a bunch of spoilt attentionseekers showing off to their fellow eco-warriors.

For all the moralising from those involved their actions were deeply selfish. How can they feel proud of stopping hardworking families who have scrimped and saved for months enjoying a welldeserved winter break?

And what about those caught up in mile after mile of tailbacks? All the fumes pumped out by stationary cars can hardly be good for Mother Earth.

This childish temper tantrum should never have been indulged. If Britain were a land governed by common sense, the police would have been out there in minutes with bolt cutters and a recovery lorry.

Most officers would relish the opportunity to serve the public by dragging the protesters away and impounding the vehicle. The great majority of British people would applaud them for it.

Next time some buffoon fancies themselves as a modern-day Swampy, let’s hope the authorities put them in their place.
