the island. It’s important for children to have their own adventures, as if they were in The Famous Five.

AND YOUR WORST?

I was offered the chance to make a BBC film in Papua New Guinea and so I asked my then fiancée Laura if she’d like to honeymoon there. Her face said, “Over my dead body” but her mouth said, “Okay then”.

The camp was reminiscent of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! but worse, and two of the researchers were accosted by a local with a machete and narrowly escaped with their lives.

BEST MEAL?

I’m not a foodie so most of the meals I enjoy on holiday are fairly rough and ready.

FAVOURITE SOUVENIR?

As it happens, Laura and I have a great memento from our trip to Papua New Guinea – and it’s a six-foot long balsa wood crocodile. It’s not the prettiest thing but I love it.

BEST HOLIDAY READ?

I’m very bad at books. I really don’t read many at all. On holiday I gravitate towards musicians’ autobiographies and I really enjoyed reading Joni Mitchell’s memoir In Her Own Words.

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME ON HOLIDAY?

I have a routine of getting up reasonably early and going for a walk around wherever we’re staying. It’s a good time to spot birds. However by about 10 o’clock it’s a bit too hot and they’ve given up and so have I.

Often in the afternoons, Laura, who’s a great artist, and I will find a nice cool corner to do some painting.

WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO REVISIT?

I had a great time in India filming The Real Marigold Hotel with people such as Lionel Blair and Sheila Ferguson, so I’d like to return there but visiting different parts of the country.

WHERE NEXT?

We’ve booked a trip to the Scilly Isles for September.
