Married GP tried to ‘kiss and cuddle surgery staff’

- By Jan Disley

A MARRIED doctor claimed “I have bachelor blood in me” as he tried to kiss and cuddle female staff at his practice, a tribunal heard yesterday.

Dr Shiv Bagchi, 68, whose wife Angela, 56, was a nurse at the GP’s surgery, carried out the unwanted sexual advances over six years, it was claimed.

He allegedly told some female colleagues he loved them and was planning to leave his wife and that he led a “single man’s life”.

The medical tribunal heard that one of the six women was a medical student due to marry.

The GP, who ran a health centre in Sunderland, was reported to the General Medical Council after the student told her tutor that Bagchi had kissed her on the cheek and said: “I get urges like any man – you should only have sex with someone you know.”

Five other workers from the surgery then came forward with similar complaints about incidents 2015.

The unnamed medical student from Newcastle University, who had been assigned to the practice in February 2015, also claimed she was subjected to an impromptu medical examination by Bagchi.

Thomas Moran, for the GMC, told the hearing in Manchester: “He put his hand underneath the waist band of her trousers and moved it to her groin area.

“This was about sexual gratification under the cover of between and some sort of demonstration.” Mr Moran said during a later encounter, Bagchi “told her she was a beautiful person and anyone would be proud to go out with her. He then mentioned he had bachelor blood in him”.

The student complained to the practice nurse the next morning.

The practice manager – who was referred to as Miss B – alleged that Bagchi repeatedly tried to kiss her on the lips and told her: “I love you – we are best, best friends”. A third woman, named as Miss C, said she was given notes by Bagchi in which he also wrote “I love you”.

And a sixth woman, Miss F, said the GP whispered “I love you” and told her he was having “problems” with his wife.

Bagchi, from Sunderland, admits being “tactile” but denies sexually motivated misconduct. The hearing continues.
