Prue says sorry for stirring things up with Chris Evans

- By Natalie Chalk

NEW Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith has apologised to Chris Evans for referring to his “failed attempt” at hosting Top Gear.

TV chef Prue has been confirmed as Mary Berry's replacement alongside Paul Hollywood when the TV baking series switches to Channel 4.

She was commenting on the former Top Gear presenter's short stint fronting the motoring show after the departure of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.

Speaking before confirmation that she had landed the role, Prue said she “doesn't want to do a Chris Evans” if she were to replace Berry.

Evans revealed on his BBC Radio 2 show yesterday that Prue had emailed him to apologise for the remark.

Referring to taking over a hit show from somebody else, he said: “I thought, well, that's fair enough, so I said on air that if you [Prue] want any tips about potential pitfalls, as long as you cook me lunch, Prue we can have a chat about that.”

Fearing that her remark had gone down like a Victoria sponge that had sagged, he revealed that Prue had emailed him later saying: “What a silly thing to say.” Evans responded: “No, it's the perfect thing to say because a) it got you publicity for the new show and b) it's absolutely right, by the way.”

Presenters Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding will host the new-look series, previously one of the BBC's flagship shows .

Prue said landing the role was an honour, adding: “I can't wait to see what the real stars of the show – the bakers – will create.”
