Our shock at getting postcard sent in 1976

- By Chris Riches

Mystery message… Stewart Glass with the postcard A COUPLE were flabbergasted when a mystery postcard arrived through their door – dated from more than 40 years ago.

When retired Stewart Glass, 67, and his wife Sandra checked the morning post on their doormat, one item stood out.

The postcard was sent on August 5, 1976, by two women enjoying a summer holiday in Poole, Dorset.

The Royal Mail insisted it has probably not been gathering dust in their system all this time.

Instead bosses say it must have been found elsewhere and just now popped into the post.

Curious

Mr Glass and his wife were amazed to see old cars on the postcard, the old date and 6½p stamp. He said: “We do sometimes get the wrong post delivered but this was something else, like it was lost in a time warp.”

The couple, who have lived in Mickle Trafford, Cheshire, for almost four years, said they had never heard of the intended recipient Karen Tidd.

But a check of the deeds revealed the surname was linked to the home in the 1960s. Their “postcard from the past” quickly became a talking point for family, friends and neighbours.

The photo shows Branksome Chine beach in Poole and on the back the authors, Linda and Janette, write about having a “lovely time”.

They also describe meeting “two lads from Malta” at a disco and lament their lack of a good suntan.

Mr Glass, a former communications specialist, who has two grandchildren, said: “I thought something was a bit odd when I spotted the cars. They looked a bit ancient. Then I saw the date and couldn’t believe it. We had it on our mantelpiece and everyone has been very curious about it.

“It must just have been lying dormant somewhere until someone posted it. It’s all very strange.”

Royal Mail said the card would have been delivered as soon as it entered the postal system – even though it had a 40-year-old stamp on it.

A spokeswoman said: “It is very likely that the postcard has been put back into the postal system by someone recently, rather than it being lost or stuck somewhere.”
